Our GLOBE 7th graders have recently been taking a class called "Changemakers" To kick off this class, students and teachers read the book "Be a Changemaker: How to Start Something That Matters" by Laurie Ann Thompson
In addition to reading the book, they welcomed various community speakers to their class, activists who saw a change that needed to be made in our community and started a program, raised money, or began some sort of movement to change it! From this, our 7th graders came up with their own ideas for being the change they want to see in the world and created their own Changemaker project!
After working hard collaborating on ideas and a mission statement as a team, students created:
The Shelter Project: GLOBE Academy students providing basic needs and security to those experiencing homelessness in our community.
During February the Shelter Project started their first effort and collected donations to fill bags for homeless individuals living in our community. The bags include items like hand sanitizer, granola bars, toothbrush/toothpaste, socks, a note of encouragement, bars of soap, shampoos, and conditioners. Through the generous donations of the GLOBE community, they were able to fill 81 bags!
Last week the Shelter Project students passed out the bags to parked cars during both our lower and upper campus carpools. Anyone who accepted a bag is now able to hand it out to someone who is homeless or in need that they may see while in the community. Students also encouraged drivers to consider packing their own bags and and carrying on the cause!
We are so proud of our 7th grade students and their first Changemaker, Shelter Project and are looking forward to seeing how they will continue being the change they want to see in their world with their future efforts! GO GLOBE!
