The DeKalb County School District is moving to a balanced calendar for the 2013-2014 academic year, which shortens the long summer break and apportions those vacation days throughout the year. The GLOBE Academy embraces a balanced calendar because it helps avoid the significant brain drain that can occur over the long summer holiday—which can especially impact second language learners if they do not have other opportunities to practice. The GLOBE Academy also recognizes that families may have older children enrolled at other area schools and does not want to burden them with conflicting calendars.
